Slicked Species

A huge oil spill off the coast of Louisiana. Source
It is getting closer to land and when I head the NPR story with wildlife experts testimonials’ of the expected destruction I started to cry. The Gulf is such a delicate ecosystem as it is. There are already points when the waters become anoxic (no oxygen) and create dead zones in the middle of the ocean. This oil spill is going to kill a lot of things. From oysters beds to birds and sea turtles. What bothers me the most is that it took until today for any federal aid to head to the area. Now only when humans and the economy are at risk do we care. I don’t want to get to into it, but why wouldn’t the ecosystem be important enough to save on its own?
No matter who is helping, it is coming. This oil spill is going to affect this area for many years to come and some species that are already extinct may not make it out. If I could I would go to LA and help with the cleanup, but I don’t have the money or time off to go.
Off my personal environmental soap box.
Back to light hearted food topics
Lunch was lovely!
Romaine and spinach with peppers, tomatoes and avocado with balsamic.
Plain yogurt with mango, kiwi and granola. This yogurt parfait was amazing! Fresh fruit >>>>>> than sugar fruit in most yogurt.
For my afternoon snack I gave the Amazing Grass bars another try. I just have an issue with the 27g of sugar! The second ingredient is sugar! I think I might try and make these on my own with my own Amazing Grass superfood powder. It will be cheaper at least.
After work I headed to the trail for a nice bike ride. I am really trying not to run two days in a row. It is going to be hard, but today I did a nice 12 miles on the NCR trail. I am pooped after. I cannot wait to have my road bike with tires that don’t slow me down.
I was starving when I got home! I showered quickly and has a slice of Dakota because I seriously felt like I could pass out.
I then had enough time to think though dinner and take the time to enjoy it.
French lentils on toast with kale chips.
Mix of French lentils, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and avocado.
I love lentils! I am a little peeved because Nick threw out my leftovers while he was doing the dishes
I was too slow.
I just had some espresso bean dark chocolate and I am heading to bead. I’m not feeling so hot and I can’t stop thinking about baby birds covered in oil.
Night.
Orioles Magic
Posted: April 9, 2010 Filed under: breakfast, Friday | Tags: Amazing Grass, gone nuts, oat bran 1 Comment »Good Morning! It is Friday! Happy Dance
Sorry I never checked in last night we had a kickball game after work and then we went out for a bite to eat at Mother’s downtown, which is an area bar that actually had some decent food choices.
Today is not only Friday, but it is also the Baltimore Orioles opening day! I am not attending, but the city is abuzz with Orioles magic, make it happen! I am sure I will be attending a few games this year. Tickets are so cheap!
Now back to the food!
It was really hard getting out of bed this morning so I felt that my oat bran needed a little extra boost today ie Amazing Grass Superfood!
I had the usual mix with an added scoop of Superfood (I just realized that I forgot chia seeds!)
- 1/3 cup oat bran
- 1/3 cup skim
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/3 cup plain Stonyfield
- 1 banana, 1/2 in 1/2 on top
- 1 scoop amazing grass
- wheat berries
- cinnamon
- vanilla
- Last of my Sanibel pb
I love my green oats!
Time to get moving. it is a chilly 49 out there today!
Any good plans for the weekend???
Good Greens
Posted: March 4, 2010 Filed under: breakfast, Thursday | Tags: Amazing Grass, oat bran Leave a comment »I can see the sun rising this morning and it is only 6:15! Less than 2 weeks until daylight savings time, and now all we need are normal temperatures in the area.
After my experiment breakfast yesterday I wanted to go back to some oat bran I hadn’t had what seemed a century.
Green Oats!
Nothing like getting a serving of veggies with breakfast! With the banana you can’t taste the green, but I actually like the earthy flavor of Amazing Grass’s SuperFood. This banana was super sweet, almost too sweet!
In my bowl:
- 1/3 cup oat bran, h20, skim, Kefir
- cinnamon
- vanilla
- nutmeg
- 1 banana mashed
- 1 scoop Amazing Grass SuperFood
- big blob of peanut butter
- (I added chia seeds after the pic when I realized I had forgot them!)
Green Oats eaten with a green spoon. It seemed appropriate.
Natural light aimed at the window.
Sissy sighting!
Now it is that time again, ( I think I forgot yesterday!) for Food Rule of the Day brought to you by Michael Pollan!
Rule #31 : Eat Wild Food When You Can. Wild greens are some of the most nutritious out there! Also, wild game is usually lower in sat fat due their diet not containing corn or being breed for the best marbling (ew!).
Time is creeping up on me! I have to get moving!
Happy Thursday y’all!
Superman Oat Bran
Posted: January 26, 2010 Filed under: Tuesday | Tags: Amazing Grass, flax, hemp protien, micheal pollan, oat bran, scone Leave a comment »Good Morning and welcome to the down under! Well not really, but I am watching Nadal loose! They are saying he is giving up because he hurt his knee, but whatever he is always blaming injury and Andy Murray deserves every point he got! Nadal also didn’t show signs of injury until he started to loose the match. I hope Murray can pull it off!***Udate Nadal just bowed out. This is the second player I have seen do this in this tourney***
While I watched the Aussie Open I had a bowl of serious power.
Yes my bowl is messy, but I di not have time for stove top, nor do I have the desire to do another dish. Save a little water, right?
In my bowl:
- 1/3 cup oat bran, 1/3 skim, 1/3 cup water
- 1 tbs vanilla hemp protein
- 1 tbs flax
- 3/4 tbs chia seeds
- 1 scoop Amazing Grass, amazing meal
- 1 chopped homemade blueberry scone
- small blob blueberry jam
- small blob almond butter
- sprinkle vanilla almond granola
- splash of extra skim
I thought this would taste like all of the “healthy” elements but it was actually quiet delicious even without the ab, jam and other extras.
Yep, it is green! The Hemp and Amazing grass are both green.
And now it is time for Food Rule of the day brought to you by Michael Pollan!
Rule #8 : Avoid food products that make health claims. Sounds odd right? Well, for a food to have a health claim it must first have a package (the first sign of processing – minimal or massive). You must also have a lot of money to get your claims approved by the FDA and are mainly the foods produced by modern food science rather than mother nature. “Don’t take the silence of the yams as a sign they have nothing valuable to say about your health”.
Food Rule for Thought
Posted: January 12, 2010 Filed under: breakfast, Tuesday | Tags: Amazing Grass, chia, micheal pollan Leave a comment »Good Morning!
Food Rule for thought while you munch your breakie and read blogs…well at least that is what I do.
Rule 11: Avoid Food you see advertised on television. Think about it, what food do you see the most on TV? When I thought about it McDonalds came to my mind. When was McDonald ever recommended as a place to get your food if you want to live a healthy lifestyle. Just think about it! There are some grey areas with things like wheat thins, but have you ever read the ingredients list? There is a rule about ingredients in the book too, maybe it will come tomorrow!
Now onto breakfast!
I have been wanting to make chia pudding for awhile and today was the day!
Can’t see it? Well it is buried under a shredded wheat round, Kashi H2H warm cinnamon, Ezekiel flax crunch, a banana, pb and blueberry jam. Speaking of JAM head over and see Brandi for a chance to win some awesome spreads!
There it is! I mixed 2 tbs of chia seeds with about ~1/2 cup milk and a scoop of amazing grass Amazing Meal! I missed this stuff!
My bowl was so full it was hard to mix it all up, but it sure was delicious!
I am going to try making chocolate chia pudding next!
Time to scoot! See you all tonight!
Chocolate for Breakfast #3?
Posted: October 27, 2009 Filed under: Tuesday | Tags: almond butter, Amazing Grass, banana, kashi, oat bran Leave a comment »How many times can you hit the snooze button? Well with a rainy morning it was about 5! With that in mind I will have to rush through my new breakfast and this post
This was my first experience with Amazing Grass. I am starting to feel a little under the weather…thanks to all those people coughing up a lung in the office and on the trains. I thought a boost of Amazing Grass was what I needed! I wanted to make it into waffles (I know amazing right!) but I only had time for oatmeal.
I mixed the packet with 1/4 cup oat bran and 1/2 naner. The on top we have Kashi H2H other half of the naner and almond butter. I was going for chocolate, almond butter and banana. It was good, but def healthy chocolate
Good rick flavor without the sugar.
I also had a new coffee that mom got me, which is delicious! Perfect alternative to creamer, which I had to stop using because it made me feel sick.
To to gobble down the rest of my oats and head out the door! Rain = accidents and dumb drivers.
Check y’all later!

Mom and I made the green salad.
Heirloom tomato from mom’s garden.

Shredded snap peas, nasturtiums, marigolds, basil, purple pepper, cuc and 3 types of lettuce!
Rae had these awesome moon flowers on the way into the house!

We started off with some nibbles and wine.
Cape Code Golden Russet Chips, homemade guac and there was also some great cheese and bruschetta to come!
I was not a fan of this wine. I little to sweet for my liking. I gave the rest of mine to mom.
Dinner was amazing food. Thank you again Rae!
There was tabbouleh, black bean and corn salad, roasted lamb and some warm crusty bread. I also had a glass of red called “Fog”.
For dessert Rae had made homemade lemon mousse with berries.
This was so light and fluffy!!! I heart lemon! We also had a dessert wine that was way, way too sweet for me. I guess I like young grapes!
Overall the dinner was so delicious and full of good food!

SUNDAY
This morning I woke up for a long run. I had a little bit of water and the last third of my Amazing Grass bar and headed out the door for another 6mile + run.
I felt so good after this run! I think I really am building endurance! So excited to further next weekend!
After my run I had 1st breakfast with mom.
1/2 a Chobani Pom flavor with berry granola and blueberries. Then it was off to yoga! There is a store on Greenwich Ave that has free yoga classes on Sunday mornings. It was a total strength class and I was beat after it.
I had been wanting to try Robek’s – a fruit juice and smoothie bar chain. I got a carrot, celery, spinach and banana juice with whey protein.
I think they forgot the spinach!?!?! It was bright orange I don’t think that would have happened with spinach in it. Grrr it tasted like banana celery water. Oh well, I drank it and it wasn’t that bad.
After packing up the car with stuff for the apt (!!!!) Mom and I sat down for some tomatillo soup that we made yesterday with some bread butts and a little honey cup mustard.
I had half of a huge CT peach for dessert.
5 hours later I was back home and starving!!!
I mixed up some applesauce with cinnamon and almond butter. I also toasted some bread with tomato from my mom’s garden, parm and basil.

Alright I am off to unpack and get ready for another week of work, blah!
I will probably have some granola a little later, but we will see.
I hope every enjoyed their weekend!
Tomatillo! Hola!
Posted: August 22, 2009 Filed under: cooking, salsa, soup | Tags: Amazing Grass, farms market, mango, raspberries, tea, tomatillos, yogurt Leave a comment »We had crazy thunderstorms last night! I could see the lightening through my eye lids! I don’t know what time the storms rolled though but it was still raining when I woke up. I was worried that the farmers market would be canceled, but it cleared up by the time we had eaten breakfast and gotten out the door.
I had some oats!
With blueberries, peach, Bare Naked granola and crunchy almond butter.
After the market mom and I hit the Ave. and I got a white shirt. Oh so exciting, I know!
When we got home, I set to work making the two things I know how to make out of tomatillos. Green salsa and soup.

In the salsa: baked…tomatillos, garlic, onions, jalapenos and fresh cilantro.
In the soup: tomatillos, onion, cilantro, grilled chicken, jalapeno, garlic, okra, mushrooms, zuc, cumin and chili powder.
While cooking up a storm I snack on a piece of an Amazing Grass bar and some iced coffee.
Once I had gotten salsa and soup put away mom and I sat down for some lunch. I had Stoneyfield vanilla with FM raspberries and an open faced AB with fresh cut mango slices.

After the fuel we decided that we needed to tackle the basement and all of my boxes. We got everything I “needed” to take back into 3 large boxes…not too bad in my opinion (we started with 6!)
I love purging all the crap I don’t need. I still have all of my books from grad school that I don’t want to get rid of. They make me feel smart when they are on my bookshelf, but for now they have to remain in CT
All of this packing made me a wee bit hungry, or maybe it was just thirst so I had another piece of the Amazing Grass bar and an honest tea. These bars were not as bad as I was expecting, but they contain a ton of sugar! Not really my cup of tea.
Ok time to get ready to head over to a family friend’s house for a BBQ! Hopefully the rain holds off!
Hope everyone is having a great Saturday!
